As a teacher of adult literacy and numeracy for over 25 years, I saw the struggles of teachers and trainers to find ways of communicating and assessing competency information in a way that engaged their students and brought out their best as well as being ASQA compliant for assessment.
Games and gamification of learning are a fun and serious way of both drawing students into some fun, and giving them the opportunity to explain, debate, argue and finally demonstrate their knowledge of the Elements and Performance Criteria in the units and courses they're studying.
After years of watching learners and their trainers struggle to find fun, cost effective and targeted resources that provided learners with the opportunity to show what they know, and give trainers the data they needed for assessment, I decided to make available resources that achieves both at the same time.
I am Julie Esson, founder and Managing Director of Vocational Training Materials Australia (such a long name!) and I offer lateral ideas and resources that I have developed over the years. I have seen these work with learners across Australia. For 25 years, my students were in the western suburbs of Sydney and in the past 8 years have been in the cities and remote areas of the Top End of Australia (WA, NT and FNQ).
I hold a B.Ed, Post Grad Dip in Policy and Applied Social Research, Dip TAE VET, Dip TAE Training Design and Development and Dip Project Management and have 10 years' experience in formally writing and accrediting curriculum in the VET environment. I now work as an independent Instructional Designer.
